Exhibition Preface
《 Here, Present 》Beyond a Single Scene:
The Grounds of Life Where We StandToday, nos encontramos con otros’ vidas, lugares desconocidos, and various events through countless images flooding our daily lives. Images present subjects most immediately and effectively, becoming a powerful mode of communication connecting us with the world. At the same time, however, we know well that a single image cannot fully encompass or explain reality. While we often mistake fragmented media impressions for true understanding, actual life is never summarized into a single static scene, nor is it easily fixed into a specific narrative or meaning.
The artists in this exhibition took different places and subjects as their starting points. The subjects they observe from individual perspectives possess their own uniqueness, shaped by distinct geographical, cultural, and personal contexts. Their work does not stop at organizing the subject into a single, stereotypical image. Instead, these artists have quietly continued their work over a long time within concrete places, real people, and surrounding environments. Therefore, their artworks are not completed results made to verbally explain a subject, but rather records that layer by layer accumulate fleeting scenes encountered along the journey. In this context, subjects resist fixed meanings: a place is not defined simply by regional characteristics, a person is not reduced to a specific identity, and a community and its environment refuse to be fixed into a singular meaning.
Although the participating artists from Korea and Japan start from different positions, they create a remarkable common ground in the process of observing and recording. For them, work is not a logical means to prove a specific theme, but a way of sharing the truthful scenes discovered within the time spent breathing together with the subject. 《Here, Present》 is an exhibition that precisely shows the intersection where these works meet. Aquí, ‘here’ does not signify a mere geographical location. It is the actual space where the artist stayed, and the starting point where their gaze first directed toward the subject. The works presented honestly depart from the subjects viewed by the artists from the very spot where they stand today. Although they deal with different environments and communities, all works are deeply rooted in the concrete trajectories of time and space where the artist actually existed and experienced.
This exhibition neither forces these diverse works under a uniform theme nor filters them through a single interpretive lens. Instead, by placing these distinct journeys side by side in one space, it closely examines the fragmented yet vivid aspects of life today. The artworks do not explain or supplement one another. Positioned on equal footing within the gallery, they allow viewers to face how different places, people, environments, and memories fluidly coexist in the present. Ultimately, 《Here, Present》 invites us to view the rich, multi-dimensional landscapes of our current lives, through the genuine scenes discovered in the actual places the artists have passed through.
